Jane Austen Literary Novels Editorial Review
The Everyman's Library Classics edition of Jane Austen's Emma is highly recommended by customers who appreciate the brilliant character sketches, sly, understated humor, and firm moral footing of the novel. Although it is Considered the least favorite Austen book by some fans, Emma is a favorite character for many readers who think she is the most flawed of all Austen's heroines. Emma's natural privileges in life lead her to believe she can set up and arrange her friends like chess pieces in her game of matchmaking, and it's this sense of superiority that is the root of much misfortune in the book. She hurts people many times, albeit unintentionally but no matter how much Emma screws up, she never means to hurt anyone. What makes Emma likable is not her offenses, but how she responds when they're pointed out to her. She makes some foolish and even spiteful mistakes but sincerely repents and tries to make amends. Honest friends are precious, even when the truths they speak are unpleasant to hear. Emma is a smart, generally kind person. The book isn't for everyone because it's primarily driven by dialogue and not much happens, but it's a favorite for readers that love the mischievous, playful and beautiful Emma Woodhouse. The book also has some of the best characters in Austen canon including Mr. Woodhouse, Mrs. Elton, and Miss Bates. Austen truly was at her literary best when she wrote this book. People who love Austen's works should read Emma.
