What is TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement used for?

TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement is specifically designed for bonding plastic model parts together. Its formulation allows for a secure and durable connection between different plastic components, making it ideal for assembling scale models, model kits, and detailed miniatures. The solvent in the cement softens the plastic surfaces, creating a strong bond as they fuse together. This product is commonly used by hobbyists and modelers to create intricate and finely detailed projects, ensuring a seamless finish that enhances the overall appearance.

How does TAMIYA Plastic Cement differ from regular glue?

Unlike regular glues, TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement uses a solvent-based formula that melts the surface of the plastic to create a more permanent bond. This process allows the plastics to fuse together at a molecular level, resulting in a stronger and more resilient hold. In contrast, standard glues often rely on adhesive properties which may not hold up under stress or during handling. For model builders and hobbyists, this means a better performance in assembling their projects, ensuring longevity and better stability.

What types of plastics can TAMIYA 87012 be used on?

TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement is specifically formulated for use on polystyrene and other similar types of plastic that are commonly used in model making. This includes styrene sheets and components found in most plastic model kits. For best results, it's crucial to check that the materials being bonded are compatible with this type of cement. Using the correct cement ensures that your models not only bond effectively but also maintain the integrity and appearance over time.

Is TAMIYA Plastic Cement safe to use?

TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement should be used with caution as it contains solvents. It is important to work in a well-ventilated environment to avoid inhaling fumes. Additionally, wearing gloves is recommended to prevent skin contact. This product is generally safe when used according to instructions, and it is widely favored by hobbyists who appreciate the effectiveness of the bonding process. Always follow safety recommendations on the label to ensure a safe and enjoyable modeling experience.

How do you apply TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement?

To apply TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement, use a fine applicator, brush, or the included applicator tip to spread the cement along the edges of the plastic parts to be joined. Ensure both surfaces are clean and aligned properly before application. Once the cement is applied, hold the parts together for a few moments to allow the bonding process to start. This method ensures an even application and maximizes the bond strength, especially in areas requiring intricate alignment.

Can TAMIYA Plastic Cement be used for repairs on models?

Yes, TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement is an excellent choice for repairing small breaks or damage on plastic models. When a part has broken off, simply apply the cement to both the broken surfaces, hold them together until set, and the parts will re-fuse effectively. This is particularly useful for hobbyists who want to restore old models or fix mishaps that occur during construction, allowing for prolonged enjoyment of their collectible pieces.

How do I store TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement?

To maintain the integrity of TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure the cap is tightly sealed when not in use to prevent drying out or evaporation of the solvent. Proper storage is crucial for ensuring that the adhesive remains effective for future projects, contributing to successful modeling experiences over time.

What should I do if TAMIYA Plastic Cement dries out?

If you find that TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement has dried out, it's often challenging to rehydrate it. Unfortunately, once the solvent has evaporated, the cement typically cannot be revived. It's best to store the product properly to prevent this issue. If it does occur, the best course of action is to purchase a new bottle to ensure you have a reliable bonding agent for your modeling tasks. Keeping a backup on hand can alleviate disruptions in your workflow.

Is TAMIYA 87012 safe for children to use?

TAMIYA 87012 Plastic Cement is intended for use by adults and older children under supervision due to the presence of solvents. It’s important to ensure children understand the potential hazards and proper usage instructions before use. For younger users, consider supervising the application or using it as a teaching moment about safe model building practices. This ensures a safe crafting environment while instilling valuable skills in model making.
